Since 1861 when Billy Barker from England discovered bonanza grade gravels on his claim in the Cariboo, the ensuing gold rush to the region made history. An estimated 2 million ounces of gold were produced from gravels, known as placer gold, with another 1.8 million ounces mined to date from the underlying hardrock.
With gold over $1000/oz for some time now, British Columbia’s Cariboo deposits are once again the world’s stage for a top class of explorers probing beyond the “low hanging fruit” of earlier miners.
The Mount Polley Deposit and Gibraltar Copper mine occur within this belt, in addition to hundreds of small scale gravel processing operations, and a dozen or so top companies who are increasing the known lode resources for future production.
